Birchwood Wilderness Camp

A boys camp at the end of the Gunflint Trail outside Grand Marais, also listed as Camp Birchwood for Boys. It was started by Jim and Nancy Bredemus on a piece of land Jim had wanted for years, and campers paddle into the Boundary Waters straight from the camp docks. The Bredemus family still runs it. Sources differ on the first year: the American Camp Association lists 1968, while another account puts the first outpost in 1969. The year here follows the American Camp Association.
